Pitch Cinema rolls on into August with a screening of Bryan Skinner’s twisting, unpredictable ride through America’s criminal underbelly.
The film centres around the interrogation of Roger “Verbal” Kint (Kevin Spacey), a small-time con man who is one of only two survivors of a massacre and fire on a ship docked at the Port of Los Angeles.
Through a blend of flashback and narration, Kint relays to the interrogator a convoluted series of events which led him and his criminal companions to the boat, and of a mysterious crime lord – Keyser Söze – who controlled them.
The plot, predictably, spirals from there. It’s a bare-knuckle ride and is sometimes difficult to keep up, but if you manage to keep pace, the rewards are immense.
The film swept up numerous accolades, including the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay and Best Supporting Actor, and has gone on to be named as the 35th best screenplay ever written by the Writers Guild of America in 2013.
