Tim Burton’s psychedelic comic science fiction caper Mars Attacks! is the next in our eclectic series of cinema screenings here in Stratford.
A fleet of Martian spacecraft surrounds the world’s major cities and all of humanity waits to see if the extraterrestrial visitors have, as they claim, ‘come in peace’ (that old chestnut).
US President James Dale (played masterfully by Jack Nicholson) receives assurance from science professor Donald Kessler (Pierce Brosnan) that the Martians’ mission is a friendly one.
But when a peaceful exchange ends in the total annihilation of the US congress, military men call for a full-scale nuclear retaliation.
Mars Attacks!, predictably, drew mixed responses from the critical community, but the film has gone on to generate a large cult following – especially in Europe – for its surreal humour, black comedy, and self-aware parody of cheesy 1950s sci-fi outings.
The film will begin at 8pm sharp, but we advise guests to arrive at around 7:30pm so they have more than enough time to settle in and collect any food or drink from our bar.
Food & Drink tickets are available below for £10 a head, and include any meal from Empress Market’s eclectic menu plus a beer or wine of your choice. Drink-only tickets are £5, whilst standard entry (minus food & drink) to all our screenings is absolutely free when you sign up to our film club below.
